Minelab Equinox EQX15 Skill School Review
The big question always asked when looking to boost your metal detectors performance is: What advantages will a big search coil give me?
In theory a big search coil, such as this Minelab EQX15 will give better ground coverage and more depth for those treasure hunters who want to hit the illusive “Metal Detecting Jackpot” whereas the smaller search coils will work best amongst Iron contamination, being small they can winkle out the small Gold hidden between nails.
Based on several tests with different search coils I think this is just theory and nothing else.

I wanted to test my Minelab Equinox 900 using the mighty EQX15 search coil, on an Iron infested meadow, just to see how it would perform, would it have the ability and sensitivity to find small targets, while rejecting the signals from Ferrous items, such as nails.
Out in the field Equinox 900 settings
I started with sensitivity at 22 and FE filter at -1, this proved to be a little sensitive, the false signals from Iron became a little overwhelming and possibly masking the small targets.
The fix
Once I lowered the sensitivity to 18 and FE filter to 2, the Equinox 900 ran perfectly, and the signals started to punch through.

Metal Detector Depth – Your barrier to entry
Achieving greater depth using a bigger search coil is not as simple as you may think, fitting the EQX15 search coil is the easy part, the difficult part is understanding your surroundings and making the correct adjustments to your metal detector in order to compliment a bigger coil.
Even when you are confident the settings are correct, your real barrier to entry is the ground under your feet, based on mineralization and contamination, some ground will not allow the metal detector to penetrate its layers, no matter how hard you try.

Minelab Equinox EQX15 search coil my thoughts
I would highly recommend this EQX15 search coil to anyone looking for a little extra out of their metal detector, it not only finds big targets at depth, it is also highly sensitive to small targets. If you are hunting for fine jewellery or small Roman coins, worry not because this coil will not let you down.
Although it is a very lightweight coil for it’s size, I did feel some inertia when sweeping it, so it is advised you use the arm strap, just to better control the sweep.

Below you can see a video of my test day with the Minelab Equinox 900, I am sure you will agree the EQX15 is quite impressive.
