Minelab Equinox 900 the smart metal detector

The Equinox 900 opens another page in the Minelab evolution book
When Crawfords Metal Detectors asked me to test the 900, my initial question was it a worthy predecessor to the 800, which I know and love.
When this metal detector was first released, it took a little time for people to fully understand it’s real potential, and that was the all new Multi-IQ system.
Sometimes making a good metal detector is not just adding features, it is what’s buried deep within the software fighting the constant battle of making the ground invisible.

The Minelab Equinox 900 screen layout
At a glance, almost identical to the Equinox 800, with added features such as the flashlight and vibrating handle. I like the familiarity as it makes the transition between the machines seamless.
Everything is clearly explained, the Horseshoe icon opens up the discrimination mode to All Metal tone ID

8 Factory programs at a glance
Park 1 – Mid to low frequency range
Park 2 – Mid to high frequency range
Field 1 – Mid to low frequency range
Field 2 – Mid to high frequency range
Beach 1 – Mid to low frequency range
Beach 2 – Mid to high frequency range
Prospecting 1 – Mid to low frequency range
Prospecting 2 – Mid to high frequency range
Although the frequency ranges change, there are also subtle changes to the machine’s dynamics between 1 and 2
I have always preferred Park 1 for my field searching here in the UK, it appears to have a faster response with a less nervous operation compared to Park 2 or Field 2.

A new carbon fibre stem configuration
This has saved a lot of weight compared to the 800, although I am not a massive fan of the round stem as it can be prone to twisting if not tightened. Perhaps future models will have a locating pin or an off-set round style to eliminate this small annoyance.

Equinox 900 under the hood

Processing speed is one of the biggest changes, it appears to be more “snappy” on targets, I sometimes found introducing a higher FE setting on a busy field, really helped just to hit that sweet spot.
Is the Equinox 900 a worthwhile investment?
I really think so, there is a lot of competition out there, tough competition is always good for the hobby.
I really like the way Minelab have listened to their customers, and continually upgrade software and chassis to keep the product range fresh and cutting edge.

Minelab Equinox 900 – My thoughts
I know I am going to enjoy my Equinox 900 journey, the testing has been quite intense, from Beaches to Roman sites, and I cannot fault the performance. Another point worth mentioning is the small EQX 06 coil, if you get a chance to try one, I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
While I am on the subject of coils, I would really like an M9 coil for the Equinox, as it has transformed my Manticore.
